Changes in material culture

The history of the Wadjet province in the First Intermediate Period can be written from the material culture known from the burials. Here the research of Seidlmayer provides one guide. He observed two major breaks in the development of the material culture. One change is indeed visible at the beginning of the First Intermediate Period. Many stone and pottery vessel types typical of the Old Kingdom disappear from the repertoire in the tombs and one wonders whether it is possible to link these changes with the new political landscape (see below).74 A further change is visible at the end of the First Intermediate Period. The material culture of his Phase IIIB is again totally different to that of the First Intermediate Period. One wonders again whether that has to do with the change of politics and the unification of the country at the beginning of the Middle Kingdom.75
